How to handle despotic regimes

This Reuters story is about how NATO is trying to soothe the anger of Afghanis after an air strike killed some civilians. It makes me wonder why we bother rebuilding countries. The lesson I've learned after Iraq and Afghanistan is that after a rogue regime makes it clear they need to be removed, we should do it with airpower, then forget about them. When new scumbags arise, repeat.

We don't need to waste billions of dollars and a lot of lives forcing people to live modern (free) lives. It's not our responsibility.
