Chechen rebel squirrels

This is a great story from the BBC:

Squirrels have bitten to death a stray dog which was barking at them in a Russian park, local media report.

Passers-by were too late to stop the attack by the black squirrels in a village in the far east, which reportedly lasted about a minute.

They are said to have scampered off at the sight of humans, some carrying pieces of flesh.

Don't be too quick to judge the squirrels. They were probably minding their own business, chirping and collecting nuts, when a mangy beast started harassing them. Even squirrels have a breaking point.

This story reminds me of a squirrel story from long ago. When I was a kid, a neighbor was angry that squirrels were thieving bird food. Was it the same few squirrels, or a differrent one every time? To figure out the puzzle, he live-trapped every squirrel in the neighborhood, one at a time, and spray-painted each one a different color. That would let him monitor their comings and goings. What a dumbass.

Well, the guy's scientific study didn't work. The squirrels spent the entire afternoon, and part of the next day, scratching themselves almost to death. The paint was completely gone before anything could be learned.
