The nightmare that is the California DMV

In the last two weeks I learned about how California is swindling what must be millions of dollars from the people. The law states that cars must get a smog check every other year, but there's a catch. The smog schedule "follows the vin", according to a fat, witless DMV employee.

This means that the every-other-year schedule goes on forever, and if you purchase a vehicle in the odd year, you must smog it to transfer the title and register it, then smog it again the next year. That car was smogged the year before, too, so it's three in a row.

The car should not need a smog certificate if it had one the year before, regardless of the status of the title. But you knew that, because it's obvious.
